(INDIANAPOLIS) - A tragic ending to a police chase on the near west side. A seventy-nine-year-old man was killed Sunday.
He was an innocent bystander after the driver of a stolen car crashed into him.
This all began this morning around 9:20 when a car was stolen at gunpoint in the 3500 block of N Dukane Way.
It ended an hour later when the driver crashed at 16th and Riverside after a short police chase.
We hear about police chases, but this is unusual because it involved an Eskenazi Health security officer.
These are Marion County Sheriff's Deputies who are working for Eskenazi and have full police powers.
When this deputy spotted the stolen vehicle this morning, he gave chase, a short, less than 2 mile chase before the crash happened.
The impact killed a seventy-nine-year-old man who police have not identified pending notification of his family.
He was driving along when the driver of the stolen Camry t-boned him. IMPD is investigating this crash.
They say their hearts go out to the seventy-nine-year-old man's family, but they say it's important for everyone to know that officers won't stop until they get violent criminals, like the ones caught today, off the street.
This is exclusive video of one of the suspects being arrested after being bitten by a police dog. He actually ran away from the crash scene.
All told, three suspects were arrested and one handgun was recovered from the scene. Possibly the same gun used in the initially carjacking.
Police have not identified any of the suspects at this time. They say they are still piecing together their case.
