13-Year-Old Drowns In White River

Last updated on Monday, June 2, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Officials say the body of a 13-year-old boy was found in White River after they searched for several hours. Indianapolis Metro Police say the boy drowned in White River near I-70.

IMPD says a group of people ranging in ages from 11 to 20 were near the water just before midnight. Witnesses say the boy slipped off of the bank into the river southwest of downtown.

IMPD says his friends tried to help 13-year-old Micah Strong but he began to drag them down so they ran for help. The group spotted an IPS officer on his way to work and flagged him down. The IPS officer was then able to call for help.

Eight divers and two boats scanned the water. After nearly three hours the body was pulled from the water, just after 3 a.m.

Indianapolis Fire Department said the strong current and debris in the river made the search difficult.
