Study: Apartment Living Increasing

Last updated on Monday, May 19, 2014

(UNDATED) - The latest housing-starts numbers from the government suggest a change in where Americans are choosing to live.

Housing stats jumped by 125,000 in April. But 39-percent of the total is in apartment buildings, not single-family homes. That's the highest percentage in 40 years.

Indiana Apartment Association president Lynne Petersen says the market is still feeling the effects of the housing bubble, and says that market shock was so severe that it's unlikely to change any time soon.

But Petersen also sees an altered mindset leading people away from home ownership, as more people are deciding they want to live in urban settings.
