Six Injured Following Apartment Explosion

Last updated on Friday, May 16, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Six people were taken to the hospital after an apparent explosion at a west side Indianapolis apartment complex Thursday night.

IFD Capt. Rita Reith (RITE) says firefighters were called shortly after 10:00 to the Pangea Riverside Apartments on a report of an explosion in an apartment building. When they arrived, crews found signs that an explosion did occur.

Reith says two residents inside the second floor apartment, ages 19 and 20, were taken to Eskenazi Hospital with minor injuries. Four other people, ages 17, 20, 22 and 48 were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital to be checked out.

Reith says investigators have no idea at this time what caused the explosion.

Representatives from Citizens Energy Group and Indianapolis Power and Light were on scene to secure the utilities.

Reith says Citizens officials tested the air outside the building for gas but found nothing.

23 people in all were displaced after the explosion. Damage to the building is estimated at $250,000 dollars.
