Public Concerned About Safety At Circle Centre Parking Garage

Last updated on Tuesday, May 13, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Questions are being raised about the safety of parking in a downtown Indianapolis shopping mall parking lot.

Exposed reinforcement bars and broken apart concrete drew concern from people using the the downtown Circle Centre Mall Moon Garage.

Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne professor and structural engineer Mohammad Alhassan took a first-hand look at the garage and found it "very concerning". In fact, Alhassan is surprised people are allowed to park at the garage.

It appears that water had been getting into the concrete and causing the reinforcement to rust. That's according to Daniel DeGraaf, executive director of the Michigan Concrete Association.

The city hired an engineering company to inspect the garage and found no structural integrity concerns.
