Police Almost Shot 12-Year-Old Holding Pellet Gun

Last updated on Friday, May 9, 2014

(SOUTH BEND) - Police in South Bend say an officer nearly shot a 12-year-old boy who was pointing a pellet gun.

City police Capt. Phil Trent says the boy dropped the pellet gun only after an officer who had drawn her gun and shouted at him repeatedly.

Trent tells the South Bend Tribune that the officer encountered the boy Tuesday night after responding to reports of youths running along a street, with one waving a gun.

Trent says the officer ordered the boy to put his hands up after seeing what appeared to be a handgun in his waistband. But Trent says the boy pulled out the gun, pointed it at the officer while saying it wasn't a real gun.

The boy was taken to the county juvenile detention center.
