(TERRE HAUTE) - Indiana State Excise Police arrested an Indianapolis man and cited 15 businesses following a three-month investigation into fraudulent alcohol training certificates.
Corporal Travis Thickstun with Excise Police says 37-year-old Matthew Miller faces two preliminary felony charges each of forgery and theft after officers received information that he offered to sell alcohol-training certificates to employees at various Terre Haute businesses without requiring they attend any training.
Miller, a state-approved certified trainer, allegedly sold certificates to businesses or employees without providing training for 20-to-25 dollars.
In addition to the criminal charges, Miller also faces 58 counts of administrative charges for violating the terms of his server trainer license with the Alcohol and Tobacco Commission. Also, 15 businesses in Indianapolis, Beech Grove and Plainfield face a total of 115 charges related to Miller's scheme.
State law requires clerks, bartenders, waiters and managers at liquor stores, bars, restaurants and clubs successfully complete a two-hour alcohol training program. That training can be done through the Alcohol and Tobacco Commission's web site instead of attending a class in person.
