Indiana Teachers Opposing Certification Change

Last updated on Friday, May 23, 2014

(UNDATED) - A coalition of Indiana education groups is speaking out on a controversial move by the Indiana State Board of Education.

Indiana State Teachers Association President Teresa Meredith says board members are making it too easy for people with "a college degree and good GPA" to get teaching credentials.

This after Meredith says the board voted 6-5 to approve a provision that allows those seeking teaching licenses in Indiana to get certified without practical classroom experience.

Meredith says the move dilutes teacher quality and simply goes against good judgement about teaching standards.

Meredith says they want the board to reconsider the move. She says they hope the board will revisit the matter at their next meeting in early June.
