Indiana Men Continue To Avoid Doctor Visits

Last updated on Friday, May 30, 2014

(UNDATED) - An Indiana physician says too many Hoosier men are risking their health by putting off doctor visits.

Eskenazi Health's Dr. Ira Means says he sees numerous cases of men in their 30s and 40s with high blood pressure, high blood sugar or cholesterol and even instances of heart and kidney failure. The doctor says many of those cases might have been prevented.

Means says many men remain stubborn or afraid to visit doctors to get preventative care and screenings for things like prostate cancer. He says men remain far less likely to see doctors for routine visits than women.

Eskenazi Health Center Blackburn is sponsoring their 16th Annual Men's Health Fair on June 14th, the day before Father's Day. Health professionals will be offering a variety of free health screenings at 2700 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street in Indianapolis.

The screenings are also open to women in attendance.
