Illegal Dumping Leads To Recycling Site's Closure

Last updated on Monday, May 12, 2014

(KOKOMO) - Central Indiana officials have closed one of the city of Kokomo’s busiest recycling drop-off locations after it became a dumping site for illegal and contaminated materials.

Workers for the Howard County Recycling District removed the site's three recycling bins on Friday after the district's board voted to close the site.

Recycling District Director Mikki Jeffers tells the Kokomo Tribune that workers continually found piles of illegal materials in and around the bins designated for recyclable materials. She says that "every time we turned around, it was like someone was emptying out a house."

Jeffers says the items frequently found at the site included tires, furniture, construction debris, wood and paint.

Deputy Fire Chief Nick Glover had asked the recycling district to close the site due to the illegal dumping.
