(INDIANAPOLIS) - Three city workers are facing charges of theft for allegedly stealing scrap metal from a city facility.
Department of Public Works employees David Herre, Terry Lee and Edward Lawson are accused of taking scrap metal from their job as mechanics at the DPW's Belmont facility, then selling the metal to local scrap processors.
"Despite clear directives from supervisors to the contrary, the defendants - working as employees of the city - are accused of taking scrap metal from the city facility to sell for their personal gain," Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry stated. "Metal theft investigation has become more sophisticated in recent years with new reporting and tracking requirements, making it easier for law enforcement to identify both the sellers and the individual items sold at scrap yards and pawn shops."
Supervisors discovered the alleged theft when they noted the amount of scrap metal being generated at the Belmont facility fell well below totals at other facilities across the city. An investigation traced the theft back to August 2013.
Herre, Lee, and Lawson are believed to have taken materials and parts including brake drums, brake rotors, fire apparatus pumps, and copper wire from the city facility.
The men face one count each of felony theft and official misconduct, also a felony.
