Construction Zone Safety Back In The Spotlight

Last updated on Friday, May 16, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS)- An Indianapolis legislator says the death of two highway workers last week on I-69 suggests the state needs to do more either to make work zones safer, or to get drivers to slow down.

Democratic Representative Ed DeLaney says he's scheduled a meeting next week with INDOT officials to talk about whether work zone speed limits need to be lowered, or if the focus should be on making drivers obey existing limits.

He says there are some high-tech ways to do that. Missouri has experimented with sound waves that are triggered by a driver going above the speed limit, and get louder the faster the vehicle goes.

And DeLaney says the state might also consider electronic license-plate readers in work zones as a deterrent.
