Citywide Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament To Take Place

Last updated on Friday, May 30, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - That silly game of rock, paper, scissors you used to play can win you big money nowadays.

The first ever Rock Paper Scissors Indy City Championship takes place Saturday night, meaning you could win cash for a game that used to decide whether you would go first (or last) when playing with your friends in middle school.

"It's one of those things that can settle any argument," said Josh Baker, general manager of Do-317 (three one seven), which is helping to put on the competition at Fountain Square's White Rabbit Cabaret. When we asked Josh whether he was a player, he said anyone can be.

"Sure I play; I use it frequently."

You had to pre-register for the championship, and Baker says slots for the 32 teams quickly sold out.

"They are in teams of three, and they will compete in rounds against other members of other teams. You get one point for your team if you win your round, and the team that wins the championship takes home a $500 grand prize, and that's not all. We've also got a custom-made Pabst Blue Ribbon mini-refrigerator and a City Cup trophy that will have the winning team's name," Baker said.

If you're a spectators, you can also play against other spectators.

"Each person through the door will get three PBR bucks and can challenge anyone in the room for their money. At the end of the night, the person with the most PBR bucks will also get a prize."

The winner of the City Championship will not move on to a national Rock Paper Scissors competition - yes, that does exist as does a world championship.

"This is our first competition, and while we adhere to the official rules, we are not sanctioned by the national organization just yet," said Baker.

The competition at White Rabbit Cabaret begins at 7pm Saturday.
