Study: Drinking Diet Soda May Increase Risk For Heart Disease

Last updated on Tuesday, April 1, 2014

(UNDATED) - A new study could have you second-guessing your choice of diet soft drinks.

The research shows that older women who consumed two or more diet drinks per day were 30 percent more likely to experience a cardiovascular event and 50 percent more likely to die from heart disease. That's compared to women who never or rarely had diet drinks.

The study looked at 60,000 post-menopausal women over a nine-year period.

Researchers caution that the women who had more diet drinks often had other risk factors like diabetes.
