(UNDATED) - As the House Ethics Committee prepares for an afternoon vote on Representative Eric Turner, the Cicero Republican faces another test next week in the form of his first primary challenge in 10 years.
Until the imbroglio over his outspoken opposition in a closed-door caucus to a nursing home moratorium, Turner was perhaps best known as the author of the proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
Sheridan architect Parvin Gillim insists that's not what got him in the race -- he accuses Turner of not being visible in the district. But Gillim notes there's already a state law against same-sex marriage, and argues it's inappropriate to try to circumvent a court challenge by amending the constitution.
Gillim says the state should revisit the property tax caps to correct a tax shift to farmland. And he says the state needs to tweak the school funding formula.
Gillim declines to criticize Turner directly in the ethics flap. But he says he'd like to see new conflict-of-interest rules which extend beyond recusing oneself from votes to cover caucus discussions too.
Turner has said he reminded Republican colleagues of his son's involvement in the nursing home industry before speaking against the moratorium.
