(INDIANPOLIS) - Rolls-Royce says it’s working to determine what led to a chemical explosion at one of its Indianapolis plants last Friday, injuring nine workers.
Eight workers who were hospitalized after the incident Friday were released that same evening. A ninth worker was checked out at the scene.
The company said Friday the explosion occurred during the transfer of nitric acid. A chemical cloud filled the area and about 500 employees evacuated the facility as firefighters contained the spill and cleared the building of dangerous fumes.
Nitric acid vapor can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and skin, and high concentrations can cause burns and breathing difficulties.
Rolls-Royce says it notified IOSHA and EPA over the weekend. IOSHA is visiting the site Monday.
The company also said production resumed Saturday morning and it's "business as usual" Monday.
Rolls-Royce thanked the Wayne Township Fire Department, Marion County Dept. of Health, its trained plant personnel, and all other community responders for their assistance on Friday.
