(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis City County Councilman says he’s poised to recommend that the council approve the Department of Public Works’ request for $8.5 million for road resurfacing across the city.
Vernon Brown heads up the council's public works committee. He says council democrats are not "playing politics" with the city pothole issue as has been suggested by some in Republican Mayor Greg Ballard's administration.
He says DPW currently has ample money for pothole repairs this year. He says they're just trying to play catch up on repairs.
Brown says the city has been seeking funds in advance of running out of money. He says there's a difference between pothole money and street resurfacing funds. He says the city gave council a list of streets they say need $24 million worth of urgent care and resurfacing.
Brown says the list showed streets in Republican districts getting $300,000 more. He says he believes the money should be more evenly allocated.
However, the city argues that engineers suggest repairs based on science and not politics.
Brown says they'll discuss the topic during a May 1st hearing. He adds that he's only one vote on the public works committee.
Brown says he's heard nothing about Mayor Ballard's Rebuild Indy 2 Plan which seeks $67 million for road upgrades.
