New Domain Names Headed Our Way

Last updated on Thursday, April 17, 2014

(UNDATED) - If you’re tired of typing or saying “dot-com,” “dot-net” or “dot-info,” get ready.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, more commonly known as ICANN - the governing board of the internet - is releasing 175 brand new "top level domains" or "tlds" this year. Those are the final letters that follow the periods in web addresses.

Indy-based internet culture expert Steven Shattuck says the web is running out addresses so you can soon expect to see things like .plumbing or .art or even very specific URLs chosen by businesses that are willing to pay big bucks for them.

Shattuck says the URLs will free up space on the internet and allow people and firms to express their own creativity and individuality. Shattuck says the new addresses will help change the entire look of the internet.
