Mid America Sound Corp. To Pay $50,000 In Penalties Over Stage Collapse

Last updated on Tuesday, April 1, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A new settlement has been reached related to the deadly 2011 Indiana State Fair stage collapse.

The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administrationannounced an agreement with Mid America Sound Corporation, the company that installed the stage and rigging.

As part of the settlement, the state says Mid America conducted comprehensive safety training related to stage and roof structures and will do so for more employees in the future. Mid America employees attended a comprehensive 5-day safety training course conducted by an outside organization on the construction of temporary roof structures.

Mid America will also pay $50,000 in penalties, to be made through four periodic payments of $12,500.

"This agreement is a resolution requiring both extensive safety improvements for the construction or erection of temporary roof structures and specifically related employee safety training that will create a safer workplace for Indiana event production workers," said Labor Commissioner Rick Ruble. "The agreement produces a positive outcome for everyone involved."

Mid America Sound released this statement:

"On March 20, 2014, Mid-America Sound Corporation and the Department of Labor entered into an Agreed Entry resolving litigation that resulted from IOSHA's citations issued to Mid-America following the events of August 13, 2011 at the Indiana State Fair. While Mid-America contested the appropriateness of the citations and made no admission of any wrongdoing by entering into the settlement, Mid-America believed that it was important to move forward in a cooperative effort with IOSHA and to avoid the costs and expenses of further litigation."
