Goshen City Council Will Allow Residents To Keep Chickens

Last updated on Thursday, April 17, 2014

(GOSHEN) - A northern Indiana city council has reversed itself and approved a proposal allowing residents to keep chickens at their homes.

The Goshen City Council voted 4-3 Tuesday night in favor of a two-year program allowing up to 50 permits for those wanting to have chickens.

The Goshen News and the Elkhart Truth report the ordinance will require residents to get written approval from neighbors and allow up to six hens and no roosters.

Supporters say people should be allowed to raise their own food, while a couple council members said they were worried about health concerns and property values in the 30,000-person city.

The council had voted last month against a similar proposal.
