GM Recalls Another 1.3 Million Vehicles

Last updated on Tuesday, April 1, 2014

(DETROIT) - General Motors is recalling more than 1.3 million vehicles in the U.S. due to a power steering issue.

Drivers of the recalled vehicles may experience a sudden loss of electric power steering assist. GM says on their website that if the assist is lost, steering control can still be maintained manually, but the greater effort required from the driver could increase the risk of a crash.

Models subject to the recall are as follows:

GM also noted that some non-turbocharged Chevrolet HHRs and Saturn IONs not subject to the recall will be given lifetime warranties for their electronic power steering motor.

"With these safety recalls and lifetime warranties, we are going after every car that might have this problem, and we are going to make it right," said Jeff Boyer, vice president, GM Global Vehicle Safety in a statement posted to GM's website. "We have recalled some of these vehicles before for the same issue and offered extended warranties on others, but we did not do enough."

On Tuesday, General Motors CEO Mary Barra is expected to apologize to consumers over their massive ignition switch recall at a congressional hearing.

This comes just days after GM asked dealers to stop selling some Chevy Cruzes. GM has received backlash over the past few weeks after being accused of issuing a recall years too late, when ignition problems were said to be causing fatal crashes for the past decade.
