(PARKE CO.) - State troopers have arrested a former 6th grade Indiana teacher after they said they discovered she embezzled thousands from her school district.
Indiana State Police (ISP) said after a nearly four-month-long investigation, detectives issued a warrant for the arrest of Melissa A. McMullen, 38, of Rosedale, Ind. She turned herself in at 10 a.m. Wednesday, ISP said.
The Southwest Parke Community School Corporation's attorney let ISP know back in January that it was missing funds.
During the months-long investigation, detectives said they discovered while McMullen was in charge of fundraising events at Montezuma Elementary School, she took a little more than $2,500 of those funds for her own personal use over the course of September through December in 2013.
That was just the tip of the iceberg, however.
Detectives said they also found between September 2011 and December 2013, while serving as the president of the Southwest Parke Education Association, McMullen took a little more than $75,000 of those funds for personal use.
ISP said, however, that McMullen (through her attorney) has since reimbursed that amount back to the education association.
McMullen was booked in the Parke County Jail on four counts of theft and one count of forgery, with a bond set at $15,000.
