(UNDATED) - Domestic violence incidents like the recent ones in Indianapolis are no surprise to counselors and therapists.
Julian Center Programming Vice President Betsy Whaley says at least one in four women will experience some sort of domestic violence or sexual assault in their relationships during their lifetime.
Whaley says domestic violence crosses all socio-economic lines and more and more men are also victims of domestic violence, but often don't report it.
She says the issue is all about control and trying to "own" another person.
Whaley says she often talks with victims who see the signs early in their relationships. She says early on, victims tend to ignore the signs until it's too late.
People should be engaged, but cautious when it comes to seeing possible victims. Whaley notes that it's okay to offer help and try to connect them to resources they may need.
