(MUNCIE) - Delaware County Treasurer John Dorer faces an initial hearing Friday morning on more than 40 felony charges accusing him of repeatedly failing to deposit county money on time.
Dorer faces a single theft charge accusing him of taking money from a cash drawer. But most of the charges accuse him of violating the law requiring county deposits to be made no more than one business day after the money is received.
Delaware County Prosecutor Jeff Arnold says the investigation began last fall after a State Board of Accounts audit declared Dorer had ignored calls in previous audits to address the issues. He says auditors declared it's impossible to tell whether any money is missing or not.
Dorer is accused of failing to promptly deposit nearly three-million dollars between 2009 and 2011. The amount of money involved makes the charges felonies carrying as much as 20 years in prison.
A felony conviction would automatically remove Dorer from office.
Arnold has filed a separate civil petition seeking Dorer's immediate removal, a step recommended by the State Board of Accounts.
Dorer also faces single counts of official misconduct and misdemeanor conversion.
