(UNDATED) - The Indiana Department of Insurance is using Flood Safety Awareness Week this week to urge Hoosiers to consider flood insurance.
DOI General Counsel Tina Korty says more private insurance companies are offering more competitive cost flood insurance. However, policies remain separate from homeowner's insurance.
Korty adds that many carriers still don't offer flood insurance given the high costs.
The National Flood Insurance Program generally accepts most who apply. Korty says the federal program tends to assume that most applicants live in flood plains - areas prone to flooding during heavy rains - which many do, hence the high cost to insure them.
Korty says private flood insurance companies can reject those who live in high risk areas. Consequently, she says, they may offer lower rates.
