(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana House has approved a proposal to drop drug-testing standards for unemployment benefit applicants.
The House passed the measure 65-34 during the final session day Thursday. It still needs approval by the Senate and Gov. Mike Pence before becoming law.
The measure would drop current requirements for drug tests taken by applicants.
Indiana labor groups say unreliable tests bought at drug stores could be used in the absence of state standards. Opponents of the bill disagree on how stringent tests should be, but they believe some oversight is needed.
The measure was tacked onto a child labor bill in the closing days of the session.
Portage Democrats Sen. Karen Tallian and Rep. Chuck Moseley were removed from negotiations by House and Senate leaders to move the bill forward.
