(INDIANAPOLIS) - A rising number of deaths at Indiana day cares is causing alarm among children’s advocates, but many critics doubt the trend will change unless Indiana requires all facilities to be licensed.
The Indianapolis Star reports the number of day care deaths jumped from one in 2011 to nine in 2012 and 11 last year. Twenty-one of the 31 reported deaths occurred at unlicensed or illegal day cares.
Indiana is one of 11 states that exempts home day cares from being licensed if they take in five or fewer children unrelated to the provider.
The Family and Social Services Administration urges parents to check the status of their child's day care and to raise concerns if something seems amiss.
