(UNDATED) - Prosecutors are still weighing possible criminal charges against Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay. But NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has a decision to make too.
Irsay was arrested in Carmel last week on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and possession of prescription drugs.
On Tuesday, prosecutors postponed a scheduled court hearing at the request of Irsay's lawyers because Irsay has checked himself into a drug treatment facility.
Formal charges haven't been filed yet. Irsay falls under the NFL's code of personal conduct.
Goodell said at the NFL owners' meeting he "will want to understand the facts" before deciding on any discipline.
Former IUPUI McKinney School of Law dean Gary Roberts says Goodell doesn't have to wait for the criminal case to be resolved -- but it's likely he will. He says he'd expect Irsay to face a fine and suspension.
Roberts says Goodell can't let Irsay off without discipline for offenses that have brought punishment for players. But Roberts says Irsay in effect suspended himself by turning the team over to his daughter Carlie Irsay-Gordon while he undergoes treatment.
Roberts speculates Goodell might count that time against an eventual league suspension.
