(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana lawmakers are clearing the way for $400 million in new road spending, depending on how stable the state budget is at the end of the year.
The Indiana Department of Transportation is set to receive $200 million for road construction immediately and another $200 million at the end of the year if tax collections are going well.
The Senate voted 43-5 Thursday to approve the plan.
The money would be used to add lanes along Interstates 65, 69 and 70.
Gov. Mike Pence sought the release of $400 million, but Senate Republicans expressed some hesitation with releasing the money immediately. Senate Appropriations Chairman Luke Kenley crafted a plan last year that put away the money to be spent on major road projects.
