(KOKOMO) - Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight says outdoor weather alert sirens haven’t proven to be the best way to alert folks about dangerous weather. Goodnight says they tend to be antiquated and ineffective.
Goodnight says that's why Howard County has invested in a digital mass notification system.
The Mayor says the system will include the City of Kokomo and alert about 85,000 residents when needed. The $32,000 a year alert system can be used for tornado warnings, flooding, gas leaks, amber and silver alerts and even targeted for specific parts of the county.
Goodnight says the digital system alerts people through their mobile devices, TVs and other means. He says the city also uses weather radios which cost less than $10 each.
Goodnight says in the past, weather sirens have either been faulty or damaged by the very storms they're supposed to warn people about if they're even activated in a timely manner.
