(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana is awarding more than $11 million to afterschool programs for students in poor or low-performing schools.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz announced on Monday the 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants will be split among 53 organizations across the state with 184 afterschool sites. They are joining 24 organizations with 69 sites already in the program.
This year's awards will be funded for a little more than four years, pending annual reviews. Each organization received at least $50,000, with some getting as much as $300,000.
The grants are part of the federal No Child Left Behind Act and are intended for mentoring, arts, sports and other activities for children. The grant recipients also encourage academics and tutoring, including literacy programs.
