Gun Stolen By Dillinger To Be Returned

Last updated on Friday, March 7, 2014

(AUBURN) — The FBI plans to return a .45-caliber Thompson submachine gun stolen by members of the John Dillinger gang from a northeastern Indiana police station to the department.

The Star of Auburn reports Auburn Police Chief Martin McCoy is inviting the public to attend the presentation 11:45 a.m. Thursday at the DeKalb County Courthouse.

The gun was stolen on Oct. 14, 1933, along with bulletproof vests, ammunition, and several other firearms. The gun was later recovered by the Tucson Police Department in Arizona and turned over to the FBI.

McCoy says the department is making plans to preserve and display the gun.

Dillinger was born in Indianapolis and became famous as a Depression-era bank robber. He and his gang robbed several banks and police arsenals in Indiana during the 1930s.
