Former Child Welfare Official Resigns From School Seat

Last updated on Monday, March 17, 2014

(NEW CASTLE) - A former child-welfare official accused of lying to a grand jury investigating a high school counselor charged with sexually exploiting teenage boys has resigned from his school board seat.

The Star Press reports 58-year-old Michael Fleming stepped down Thursday from the New Castle Community School Board.

Fleming faces one count each of perjury and making a false statement. Federal prosecutors allege Fleming told a federal grand jury last month that he'd never heard complaints of alleged misconduct by Darrell Hughes, a New Castle school counselor who's charged with sexually exploiting male students.

Fleming had been director of the Indiana Department of Child Services' New Castle office.

Prosecutors say Fleming was fired by DCS last month for allegedly urging a subordinate to make false statements in the Hughes investigation.
