Colts Owner Jim Irsay Checks Into Rehab Facility

Last updated on Wednesday, March 19, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The day after his arrest for illegal possession of prescription drugs, Colts owner Jim Irsay checked himself into a rehab facility.

"Yesterday, Jim Irsay took the first step toward regaining good health. He voluntarily checked into a highly-respected health care facility and is committed to undergoing the treatment and care necessary to help him meet his challenges head-on," read a statement released by Avis Roper, the senior director of Communications for the Colts. "Jim, the Irsay family, and the Colts organization are all deeply appreciative of the incredible outpouring of support and compassion from our fans and the Indiana community."

Irsay is due in court March 26 to face four felony counts of driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance. His car was pulled over Sunday night by police in Carmel because it was traveling 10 miles an hour in a 35 mile-per-hour zone. Police say Irsay failed several field sobriety tests, and they later found drugs inside prescription bottles that did not match the drugs during a search of Irsay's car.

The Colts did not announce the facility where Irsay would receive treatment, nor how long his treatment would last. Irsay has previously admitted to prescription drugs, and he has long admitted to suffering from chronic back and hip pain. Carmel Police have not specified the drugs found in Irsay's car, only that they were "Schedule IV controlled substances", a wide variety that includes Ambien, Darvocet and Xanax.
