Bikers May Get a Pass on Red Lights

Last updated on Wednesday, March 5, 2014

(UNDATED) - Motorcyclists and bicyclists could legally run red lights on occasion under a bill headed for Governor Pence.

Buck Creek Senator Brandt Hershman explains many traffic lights operate on sensors which detect metal and turn the light green. But motorcycles and bikes don't have enough metal to trigger the lights, leaving cyclists waiting at an intersection until a car comes along to trip the sensors.

The bill authored by Kokomo Representative Mike Karickhoff would let bikers go through the red light if they've been sitting there for two minutes and there's no traffic coming.

Indianapolis Democrat Greg Taylor cast the only no vote in the Senate. The bill passed the House 82-10.
