(WEST LAFAYETTE) - The Climate Prediction Center came out with their monthly outlook and it shows below average temperatures are probable in April. The below normal temperatures could bring problems for farmers who grow corn.
Purdue Corn Extension Specialist Bob Nielsen said the temperatures will be more of a nuisance than anything. Nielsen said the wet soil will take longer to dry, which may postpone planting the crop. However, he said a delayed planting season does not necessarily mean smaller yields.
"In the last couple of years, we've ranged from some of the earliest plantings on record state-wide to some of the latest plantings on record. And they did not really predict good yields or bad yields. In fact, the end results were almost opposite of what we would've expected," explained Nielsen.
Nielsen suggests farmers to be patient and being prepared to plant when the conditions are fit.
He said there may be more problems if cool temperatures last through May.
