April 15th Tax Filing Deadline Approaching

Last updated on Monday, March 17, 2014

(UNDATED) - You’ve got about a month to make that April 15th tax filing deadline.

The IRS says more Americans are filing their taxes themselves this year. So far, they say about 27.4 million Americans have filed their own taxes this season. That's up about 5.8% over this time last year.

Fewer Americans are relying on professional tax preparers. 34.8 million Americans have relied on professionals so far this tax season. That's down 2.2% from this time last year.

Indy-based Liberty Tax Service Manager Greg Carney says the tax code remains cumbersome and complicated.

Carney says yes, professionals get paid for preparing tax forms, but it's still best to seek out those who understand the ins and outs of tax law.

IRS Spokesman Luis Garcia says about 80 percent of Hoosier filers should get refunds this year. Garcia says whichever route you choose, filing should be timely and accurate.

Garcia says there's plenty of software available to use free of charge at irs.gov to file those returns.
