(BALTIMORE) - A woman was hit and killed by a driverless car while she was walking down a hill Monday, police said.
73-year-old Lee Sheila Mahoney was walking downhill along a Baltimore street when a parked 2010 Ford Mustang began to roll behind her without a driver. The vehicle hit Mahoney from behind and came to a stop on top of her, police said.
The owner of the Mustang, David Adam Garman, 23, saw his car moving downhill and ran from a house to get it. Garman then started the vehicle and began to back it up. He did not know Mahoney was underneath it, according to police.
Emergency crews rushed Mahoney to Anne Arundel Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, WMAR reported.
Police said the primary cause of the crash is driver error. Garman failed to park the vehicle with its wheels turned properly toward the curb with the parking brake set.
The Traffic Safety Section of Anne Arundel Police said the investigation into the crash was ongoing.
