(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana is one step closer to legalizing hemp.
A committee in the Indiana House gave unanimous approval to a bill that would clear the way for hemp production if the federal government gives the go-ahead.
It's an effort supported by the people who want legalized marijuana but is not considered to be a step in that direction. Instead, the hemp would be used for medical and industrial purposes.
"There are all sorts of applications for the the product," said Bob Kraft, a farmer who supports it, "and there really is no reason whatsoever to keep it on the restricted crop list."
In the meantime, a bill to decriminalize marijuana possession failed to get a hearing in the General Assembly and one advocate of legalized marijuana is giving up.
"I don't think they're going to even bring it up on the table until the federal law recognizes it," said Bill Levin of Re-Legalize Indiana. "I just don't see it here in Indiana."
