(WEST LAFAYETTE) - A Purdue Extension expert says homeowners can take steps now to prevent water damage to their homes as Indiana’s thick snowpack thaws out this week.
Disaster education specialist Steven Cain says homeowners should start by surveying the snow and ice that's built up around their house over the winter. He says ice dams and high snowdrifts can block water runoff.
Cain says homeowners can help move water away from their homes by digging a channel to funnel it to a lower grade. But Cain says care should be taken not to shift that water into their neighbors' homes.
The National Weather Service says parts of northern Indiana have the equivalent of up to 4 inches of water in snow and ice, with the equivalent of 1-2 inches elsewhere in Indiana.
