(AVON) - The driver involved in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian Wednesday night came back to the scene to turn himself over, police confirmed.
The victim was identified Thursday morning.
Officials said the incident happened on Rockville Road near Dunkin' Donuts just after 10 p.m. Wednesday. A report came in of a person found lying on the ground in the snow and ice.
That person was identified as Robert L. Blakenship, 36. Police said he was rushed to the hospital and was pronounced dead at 11 p.m.
Officers with the Avon Police Department said there were no witnesses to the incident, but a short time after the collision the driver returned to the scene, saying he was the one responsible for hitting the pedestrian. Police said he is cooperating with the investigation so far.
Police reported that the driver said he unknowingly hit the pedestrian. The driver said he realized there was damage to his car shortly afterward, and was backtracking to try to figure out what he had hit.
Investigators said it's too early at this point to tell what the victim was doing before the crash, but evidence suggests the person was indeed on foot.
Police said alcohol isn't suspected in the crash, but as a matter of policy blood testing is underway.
