Last updated on Friday, February 14, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Emergency crews responded to a crash early Thursday morning between a Jeep and a semi on the city’s east side, resulting in the death of one driver.

Dispatchers told RTV6 the two vehicles crashed at roughly 3:30 a.m. on westbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 87, near the Emerson Avenue exit.

The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) said two people were transported to the hospital. The driver of the Jeep, a man, was pulled from hisvehicle and sent to Eskenazi Health in critical condition. IFD said the driver of the semi truckwas also taken to Eskenazi, but to be evaluated for a non-related medical issue.

UPDATE: Indiana State Police (ISP) said the driver of the Jeep - identified as William Nichols, 34, of Indianapolis - was pronounced dead at Eskenazi.

IFD said witnesses have told investigators that the Jeep veered from the center lane into the path of the semi, which was traveling in the left-hand lane.

Investigators said drugs or alcohol are not suspected as factors, but they believe Nichols may have suffered a medical condition just before the crash occurred.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) said the left two lanes of I-70 West were closed near Emerson Avenue. As of 5:50 a.m., the crash scene was cleared and all lanes of westbound I-70 were back open to traffic.
