(SULLIVAN) - An apartment building fire on Thursday has claimed the life of one person and injured 18 others.

ABC affiliate WAWV-TV in Terre Haute reports 72-year-old Bruce Thompson died of smoke inhalation at Sunrise Towers, just north of downtown Sullivan.

Investigators believe the fire began just after noontime in Thompson's apartment on the fifth floor.

Sullivan County Community Hospital treated 18 people for injuries including smoke inhalation.

The Terre Haute Tribune-Star reports that tenants of the building, operated by the Sullivan Housing Authority, are mostly senior citizens and people with disabilities.
