(FISHERS) - Quick action by a Fishers police officer and an emergency room doctor helped save the life of a 12-year-old boy who collapsed during a basketball game Saturday, Fishers Police said.
Fishers Police Sgt. Troy Fettinger was doing a security check at Fishers Junior High School when the boy, Joel, collapsed on the court, police said.
Fettinger radioed for help and got his Automated External Defibrillator from his cruiser while a Community Hospital ER doctor who was in the crowd started CPR.
Fishers Police said an ER doctor at IU Health at Saxony, where Joel was taken, told the boy's mother that Fettinger had saved her son's life.
The doctor said Joel had gone into a lethal heart rhythm, and the use of the AED was critical in saving him.
Joel was transferred to Riley Hospital for Children to recover.
