Mother Arrested After Young Boy Found Wandering In Snow

Last updated on Friday, February 14, 2014

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A four-year-old boy is recovering from frostbite after he was found lost and wandering in the street in freezing temperatures.

The boy's mother is in jail, facing criminal neglect charges. The child walked out of his home in the 800 block of North Tacoma Avenue and was rescued by two women.

"You can see the little ones right there and right there and around that tree," said Amanda Adams, one of the women who found the boy.

She believes the young boy was lost and went from yard to yard in the snow.

"Walked through that yard over there, too, maybe. Some right through here and all through here. Looks like he came back this way and walked," Adams said, pointing out footprints in the snow.

She called police after taking the child inside to warm up. They wrapped him in a hand-sewn quilt.
"He was just shivering," said Wanda Lutane, Adams' mother.

Lutane believes they got to the boy in the nick of time before the bitter cold could do any permanent damage.
"They were so numb and so purplish. He didn't have his normal color. He was pale...and when he sat down, his legs from here to here were so red and chapped," she said.

Eyewitness News tried to talk with other family members, but no one answered the door at the little boy's home a few blocks away. Police questioned and eventually arrested the boy's mother, 24-year-old Ashley Didion, at the home.

Lutane hopes whenever Didion is reunited with her son, she remembers never to let him out of her sight, especially in freezing weather.

"A child should not be unattended, regardless," she said.
