Man Arrested After Choking And Punching His 84-Year-Old Grandmother

Last updated on Wednesday, February 12, 2014

(GREENWOOD) - A 31-year-old Greenwood man choked and punched his 84-year-old grandmother Monday night while she tried to stop an argument between the man and his wife, police say.

Officers went to a home in the 1400 block of Berry Road around 11 p.m. Monday after receiving a call about a domestic disturbance. When police arrived, they spoke to Adam Kirkhoff and told him they were there to investigate a report of battery. Kirkhoff told officers he "had been sleeping and had no idea what was going on," according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

Officers noticed Kirkhoff's grandmother's wrist was bleeding from a cut. She also appeared "physically shaken" by the incident, police said. She told officers that Kirkhoff was arguing and cursing at his wife. When she came out to check on them, Kirkhoff "kicked, punched and grabbed her by the throat and pushed her down on the couch," the report said.

Kirkhoff's wife corroborated the grandmother's account, saying she'd come home around 9:30 p.m. Not long after that, she said, Kirkhoff started swearing at her. Kirkhoff's wife said he then "kicked, choked and punched" his grandmother after she came to see what the commotion was all about.

After being informed he was being arrested on a preliminary charge of battery, Kirkhoff told police he "may have pushed his grandma." He was taken to the Johnson County Jail.
