(INDIANAPOLIS) - Some Indiana fields could become green with industrial hemp if momentum for a legalization proposal keeps growing.
The state Senate unanimously approved a bill to legalize industrial hemp Monday.
Hemp is marijuana's non-intoxicating cousin but it cannot be grown under federal law. Many products made from hemp, such as oils and clothing, are legal.
Indiana would need to apply for a waiver to allow hemp growing even if the bill is passed. The latest version of the federal farm bill also would allow states to grow the plant if signed into law.
Proponents of the bill argue the crop could bring cash to the state and keep Indiana competitive with Kentucky, which passed similar legislation last year.
The bill needs approval from the House and governor before becoming law.
