(INDIANAPOLIS) - Prosecutors formally charged an Indianapolis daycare owner with six counts of neglect after she admitted to giving children medicine to make them sleep.
Four children from Stephanie Gribble's "Stay and Play" home daycare were taken to emergency rooms on February 12 with symptoms of possible overdose.
Court documents show that Gribble initially denied giving the kids anything, but later admitted to giving the children grape flavored cough medicine.
Blood tests also revealed Risperidone present in all four children, ranging in age from 11 months to 5 years old. Risperidone is an anti psychotic medication.
Dr. Jerry Snow, Poison Control Center, stated that Risperidone "is a complex drug that should never be administered by anyone who is not a qualified medical doctor."
The children's conditions included drooling, drowsiness, tongue hanging out, drooping head, clenched fists and even unconsciousness.
Doctors said the children were "in such poor condition when they arrived that medical personnel suspected brain injury."
It is unclear if the children recovered from their injuries or if they will suffer any long term physical effects.
Investigators say Gribble has operated a day care out of her home for 7-10 years. They say the name and location of the day care changed several times.
An initial hearing on the charges is scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m.
