Convicted Murder Captured

Last updated on Tuesday, February 4, 2014

(MIDDLEBURY) - A convicted murderer who escaped from a Michigan prison has been captured in northern Indiana.

Michael David Elliot, who was convicted of four murders in 1993, was caught during a traffic stop in LaPorte County. Elliot had escaped Sunday night from the Ionia Correctional Facility in Michigan.

A Shipshewana resident called the LaGrange County Sheriff's Department around noon Monday after noticing a red Jeep Libertyoutside her residence. The vehicle matched the description of the one Elliot was last known to be seen in.

After confirming the vehicle was the one in question, officers from several departments converged on Shipshewana to search for Elliot. The search, however, was suspended around 5:30 p.m., with no sign of the suspect.

Sometime after 6 p.m., a LaPorte County Sheriff's Department deputy tried to pull over a vehicle that had been reported stolen, but the vehicle sped away. After a short pursuit, the vehicle stopped and the driver, who was identified as Elliot, was taken into custody.

He is being held at the LaPorte County Jail.
