Bill Boosting Gun Crime Sentences Heads To House Floor

Last updated on Tuesday, February 25, 2014

(STATEHOUSE) - A bill to jack up criminal sentences for gun crimes has cleared another legislative hurdle and is headed for the House floor.

Indianapolis legislators and Mayor Greg Ballard began pushing for a mandatory extra sentence of up to 20 years after a wave of home-invasion robberies last fall. Ballard says three-quarters of Indy's homicides are committed by people with prior convictions for crimes against others -- he says existing law allows those people to return to the streets too quickly.
